Not that long ago I saw Planet Organic tweet that they were now carrying Holy Crap so after a while and after hearing a few others say they got their hands on some (oh the powers of Twitter!) I finally got myself some to try. First of all, I was not too happy to be spending nearly $13 on a rather small package of “breakfast cereal,” but I have been known to fork out a more than reasonable amount on a health food item before.
Quite honestly, I feel a little duped by this product. Maybe it’s because I’m more on the “health savvy” side of the ingredients in the product, but does this look like “cereal” to you? A serving size is 2 tablespoons.
Ingredients: organic chia, hulled hemp hearts, organic buckwheat, organic cranberries, organic raisins, apple bits, organic cinnamon.
All WONDERFUL ingredients and extremely healthy which I absolutely appreciate, but for me, I feel like it’s a glorified type of “seedy trail mix” that I could make myself with a quick trip to the Bulk Barn, especially for the price I paid for such a small package. I was already adding cinnamon, chia and hemp seeds to my oatmeal and smoothies so I personally don’t feel like this is worth the bang for my buck.
For people who don’t normally have these (ingredients) items on their shopping list, it most definitely IS a healthy item to add TO your cereal or yogurts etc because there are some pretty major health benefits to the ingredients in this product. But I am hard pressed to consider this product a “breakfast cereal” – just sayin.
The other point I wanted to make is that I’m pretty sure at present this product isn’t available in mainstream grocery stores (maybe it is), and the people that shop at places like Planet Organic are generally the type of people who are more familiar with foods like chia and hemp so they quite possibly may not be as impressed as the Dragons were. And those who aren’t as familiar with the actual ingredients, but are excited about the health benefits of the product, may not be used to paying $12-13 for such a small package. But that’s just me.

Uh, that looks like bird food. I love the name of the product, but I'm not sure I'd eat that!
I've heard a lot of great things about this cereal.
However, just like you said, 2 tbsp of that stuff is more like an oatmeal TOPPING then breakfast. Have you tried cooking it with oats? I often add chia or ground flax to the pot when I'm cooking oats.
As you know Angie I posted a recipe for this "cereal" to make your own homemade version. There is no way I could justify spending that much money on such a tiny bag!! I buy the ingredients at the Bulk Barn and it cost me about $12 to make 2 of their size containers!! It tastes the exact same to me.
Kara: it's definitely something you'd add to oatmeal or something rather than eat it by itself - but now that you mention it, I'm sure the birds would rave about this to their friends :-P
Lynn: That's how I'm using up the bag - I put 1 Tbsp to the oats while cooking just like I would with chia or flax or hemp.
Conny: Absolutely!
We have something like that at one of the local grocery stores here in BC, I just couldn't break down and spend $13 on cereal, even if its that good for me, without hearing a review on it. Thanks for confiriming what I already thought :)
PS Your son is freaking adorbable!! :)
The people that created that stuff are from around here somewhere so it was all over the news when the Dragon's picked it up.
I'm glad you posted this because I've seen it advertised here and thought I might try it, but now I'll pass.
PS: Christy that just commented is my friend Christy...and your kids share the same name! :)
Holy Crap! For a cereal, 2 tbsp is NOT a serving size. For a condiment, yes, but not for cereal. They should have marketed it as a cereal topper or a cereal accessory, but not an actual cereal.
Christy: it likely is the same stuff since it is actually from BC! (I think he's the cutest kid around, but I'm his mother ;-D). Jaime says you have a son with the same name? Good taste :-)
Jaime: Don't waste your money - you already use that stuff on your own too!
Megan: Yeah I guess they were expecting another connotation to "Holy Crap" lol
