Back To My (New) Roots

I've been thinking a lot about this business of balancing the ever so challenging weight loss journey with the even (more) so challenging gig of being a first time Mom, or any time Mom for that matter.

To get my head back in the game without adding too much pressure on myself taking care of a newborn, I began by tracking my food and calorie intake on a notepad and paper.  I wasn't strict, just to maintain awareness of how my day truly was looking overall.  It was a good plan and I did it for a few weeks and lost about 5 lbs.  The past few weeks though, I didn't stick to my plan and not being mindful caused me to return to my starting point!  I initially thought, well, get back to tracking because it seemed to work!  BUT I'm wondering if the "accountability" and/or "enthusiasm" aspect is missing.  The first time around, I did it all online and didn't need the physical element of accountability.  But things are obviously different this time.  I don't put myself first.  Maybe since I'm otherwise occupied, I may actually need more accountability (other than you guys, of course).

Recently, I've heard news that Weight Watchers is in the process of launching a new program and has done so in the UK.  At first I didn't even entertain the idea of checking it out because why fix something that isn't broke other than to make more money by requiring everyone to re-stock their materials and calculators etc. When a plan has been around for that long, people do eventually get a hold of the materials from their friend and the details of the plan are no longer sacred.  I say "isn't broke" because as you may know, Weight Watchers was the program that helped me lose 100 of 130lbs.

But then I had to think about it for a second.  It's not that the program was "broke" but there were a few flaws that needed improvement.  While the program was designed to encourage eating whole real foods if you truly paid attention to the "rules," it was getting a reputation for encouraging eating processed foods.  It was partly because that was how people were choosing to spend their POINTS in the strict sense of a daily POINTS allowance (100 calorie packs ring a bell?) but also because well, they SELL those kinds of foods with their name on it with a POINTS value so of COURSE people are going to assume that it is a "WW friendly" food and "only 5 POINTS" etc.  Not to mention that realistically, not all POINTS are created equally and you should not assume that a 10 POINT burger has the same impact on your body as a 10 POINT pasta dish made with healthy whole wheat pasta, veggies, protein & cheese, for example.

Since WW originally launched their POINTS system, science has revealed that eating healthier whole foods has an entirely different metabolic impact on your body than the simplistic "calories in v. calories out" science.  (Jillian Michaels bases much of her book "Master Your Metabolism" on this very principle as well.)  So it seems that WW has decided to get with the times and improve the program to reflect what science has since revealed. So far I haven't been given any direct information from WW other than what's on their European website and other internet buzz sources.

The new program is guided from the very fact that not all foods have the same impact on your metabolism, so their POINT value should reflect that [source: WW.uk].  It states:
Using protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre to calculate the ProPoints values in a burger for instance is a new, different and more accurate way to look at food and how it affects your weight loss efforts.
"In other words, the better the food is for you, the more energy your body can burn digesting it and the more of it you can eat." [source]

More buzz on the internet suggests that the new "ProPOINTS" system is going to be based not on a calculation of "Calories, Fat & Fibre" but assigning lower POINTS values to foods higher in protein & fibre.  Apparently all vegetable as well as fruit are now 0 POINTS (rather than most fruits being at least 1 and some vegetables). Not only that, but daily points allowance and weekly points allowances are 29 daily and 49 weekly "ProPoints" at a minimum.

This is all based on the UK plan and it could very well be that 29 "ProPoints" may be relative to say 24 "old points."  It all remains to be seen in my books, but the bottom line is that if it is what it sounds like, it seems like they have made the changes that I can appreciate.  From what I understand, the program being released here in Canada could be totally different and have a different name even.  We had the Flex plan with flex points since forever, but that is a new addition to this ProPoints plan in the UK now, so we shall see.

I am considering re-joining and attending WW meetings as soon as I can get it worked out on a time that works for me and the little one.  I simply just HAVE to get this weight off.  I feel it in my joints even! I feel 20 years old now.  I did promise Terri that I would re-join after the baby came, after all :-)

Review: Shaklee Natural Cleaning Products & GIVEAWAY!!

Okay so what I'm about to reveal is pretty nervy of me because when a new baby enters your life, a few basic things fall by the wayside.  Some of which include:
  • showering
  • brushing your teeth
  • blogging
  • going to the gym
  • laundry
  • common household cleaning...

Am I the only one with an overabundance of condiments in their fridge?  Anywayyy....So nothing like a little *wink wink* *nudge nudge* my way from Julie at Shaklee natural cleaning products to gently nudge me to getting to work on something that obviously needed some TLC!

So the interesting thing about this product (there are many more than the ones I'm sampling) is that there's ONE concentrated product and THREE empty spray bottles for you to fill up with good ol' nature's H2O and a variable amount of the "H2" concentrate depending on which bottle you are using.

For example, for the "All Purpose Cleaner" bottle, you fill it up with water and add 1/4 tsp of the "Basic H2" concentrate (yes that's only TEASPOON).

For the "Windows" bottle, you add only a few DROPS of the concentrate and for the "Degreaser" you add 1 1/2 tsp.  Keep in mind, you get a huge bottle of concentrate, so this stuff would last a WHILE!  Not to mention, uses for this product range from cleaning the engine of your car to your fruits and vegetables! Seriously.

Shaklee also provided me with this "Scour Off" paste to help with the hard to scrub substances and let me tell you, it smells DELICIOUS! Why? Because it's made using cherry pits!  LOVE LOVE LOVE

The suggested uses for this stuff is endless.  Everything from cleaning dishes, bath tub to your eaves troughs, motorcycle or boat! lol  I've personally also used it to clean my flat top stove and it did a fabulous job doing that too.

So let's be real, does a product that you only need a very small amount actually do the job?  Well, here's what we started with:

I wish I had of pictured the messy glass shelves for the purpose (because they were dirrty), but I think I've embarrassed myself quite enough already! lol

First I filled up my kitchen sink with hot water and instead of using my usual dish detergent to soak and wash the shelves, I added a few drops of the concentrate instead.  The shelves washed easily and cleaned back to brand new.  And to polish them up, we used the "Windows" cleaner and not a fingerprint or streak was to be seen :-)

The "All Purpose" spray was used to clean the interior of the fridge, along with the Scour Off paste to get at the sticky blobs and with very little to moderate effort, we were very pleased with the result...

Overall I am still majorly impressed that such a tiny amount of an ORGANIC completely non-toxic and environmentally friendly concentrate could do such a good job!  I feel good about using this product where my food is stored :-)  Now that I am a Mom, I truly do care about what products are being used in my home and what my little peanut is being exposed to, so I'm happy that Julie asked me to review this product because I might not have otherwise heard of it or come across it.  So I was happy to participate in a way to spread the word!

    12 Weeks Already

With each passing day I become more and more cognizant of how fast my little boy is growing up and how quickly these firsts are coming and going.  My little Peanut is now 12 weeks old.  Even through the usual struggles with a newborn (sleep or shower anyone?) are at times exhausting, you would think it would make the days seem longer, but 12 weeks have flown by in an instant.  Everyone said it, "how quickly they grow up" and I have made a point to keep that in mind every single day, taking in all of his smiles, all of his kicks, giggles, and coos and watching his wide eyes taking in more and more of this new world and I have untapped new levels of patience released purely for this purpose.

It's truly incredible how much being a mother consumes your every thought and your entire existence (in a good way).  Every thought and sentence out of my mouth has something to do with my boy.  I must annoy those friends without children because right now I haven't anything else on my mind.  I love this little boy in a way that it makes me feel like I am meant to be his Mom and I have the most important job in the world.  It's a very challenging and difficult job, the most challenging thing I've ever done, but oh sooo rewarding just to see his beaming smiling face bursting when he wakes up in the morning and it's time for his diaper change.  We could stare at each other all day exchanging smiles.  I have also developed quite a talent for coming up with silly songs and rhymes that I sing to him all day long which amuses the both of us I think ;-)

Aside from all of the cliche gushy motherhood stuff, they don't say that it's difficult for nothing. We are emerging on the other side of the "4th trimester" and I'm starting to dust myself off and rub my eyes. The word stamina comes to mind along with the patience I spoke about earlier ;-)  There is so much to say that I'm not sure where to begin, so I just might try to put together a separate post.  But for now, I just wanted to poke my head in here, tell you that I'm we're doing well, my hands are slowly starting to be freed up for a bit more blogging perhaps and that I've missed you all.  If you follow me on Twitter, you may be a bit more up to date on some of the struggles I've had over the last month, but if not, stay tuned and I'll do my best to share.

And just for fun, I have a product review to prepare which includes a giveaway too.  Giveaways are fun :-)
