How To: Microwave Eggs

In response to an anonymous request, here’s a little quickie tutorial on how to microwave eggs. It’s easy, at least seems easy, but there are a few tricks to avoid an egg fatality in your microwave.

Firstly, get to know your microwave.  You need to know how strong it is.  I never fool around with power levels, which means it’s probably on bust all the time.  Our new microwave that came with our new house (range hood one) is pretty friggin’ cool I gotta say.  It “knows” when your food is done and can sense when things are re-heated or cooked.  I have yet to use this feature on eggs, but I will try that next time.  It may make this part of the morning easier!

I normally make 2 egg whites.  Depending on if I’m having an english muffin or just 1 slice of toast will depend on the size of my dish.  The one on the left I use for one slice of toast and the one on the right I use for each side of the english muffin.  These particular dishes are Pyrex ones:

You can use any microwavable dish and many people find ramekins to be perfect for this.  Although I have a harder time cleaning those.

Next spray the dish with non-stick cooking spray.  I use this “Misto” mister that I bought at Paderno.  It’s awesome.  You fill it with your own oil (I use EVOO) and pump it and it turns it into a spray.  No chemicals or aerosol required! No more PAM in this house ;-)

Add your eggs to the bowl.  If you wanted to be fancy and creative you could also add other things like salsa, peppers, onions, spinach, cheese etc.  I always sprinkle with some S&P:

Pop it in the microwave and cover it with a napkin or paper towel.  Very important to avoid egg explosion all over your microwave!:

Here’s where you need to “know your microwave.”  There is no set amount of time because it depends on the power level, number of eggs and it depends on the size of the dish you used.  Mine is about 1:10 – 1:30  You can kind of treat it like popcorn and listen to it.  As soon as you hear it “pop” take it out:

Take a knife and flip it over to see if it needs some more time on the other side.  This avoids overcooking the top:

It was okay this time around, but many a times I’ve had to throw it back in for another 10-15 seconds to finish it off. Tip: if it’s really close, but not quite, to avoid having them explode by putting them back in, you can try letting it sit for a few minutes on its own, it might finish off just from the heat of the dish.  This sometimes works, but it has to be really close:

The perfect size a top a toasted slice of Ezekiel bread:

I burned the toast a little because I was trying to do 23948324 things at once (as usual).

I hope that helps, anonymous ;-)

Thanks for the tutorial. I've wanted to know how to do this for a long time. I am going to try it at work next week and pair it with some veggie sausage. It will be so much healthier and cheaper than anything I can get in the food court.

Hmm...I might try the eggs idea now!

Just curious, how tall are you and how did you decide on your goal weight? it's probably posted somewhere already but i couldn't see it! thanks!

CJ: Well aint that a loaded question! ;-)

I am 5'4" and I did not choose my weight based on any chart or range that is usually a standard. The weight of 170 was a number I chose because it felt realistic for me and my frame and I had a trainer to a body composition analysis of me when I was 270 who also said that 170-180 is a realistic goal weight for me given my musculature and bone mass etc. I was so happy that she said that because THAT was a number that felt realistic given the amount of poundage I had to lose! I just couldn't see the "end" in sight coming from that place and shooting for 140. Right now my "goal weight" is 165.

Fabulous (as usual)! I am so trying this in the morning! I have to say, every time you say "ezekiel" my heart flutters a bit. That's my oldest son's name. LOL

Another reason I wish I liked eggs. They're so fast and easy to prepare! I want to trade pallets with you so that I'll like all the delicious food you cook....oh and while we're trading, I'd also like your adorable smile and your amazingly addictive positive attitude....

Love YOU!!!

Angie, that sounds like a sensible way to figure out a goal weight.

Belonging to Weight Watchers means they'll only look at my BMI so my goal weight has been set at essentially what is the lowest weight I've ever been as an adult...which I reached once thanks to a ridiculous atkins diet and 2 hour workouts daily when I was in college so doesn't feel that achievable!

It's reassuring to know there are other ways out there...I'm going to look into the body composition analysis - thanks for answering!

Afraid I have one more question,re egg yolks.I read one should prick them.I LOVE the yolk-do you cook, any tips for them?
Also yolk is so tasty and not bad if you have it occasionally,do you avoid for health reasons or do you not like the yummy yolk that I find the tastiest part??(especially im a soft boiled or poached egg on toast!)
thanks again for your time :)

Hi Angie,

I came across your blog by typing into google "ezikiel bread+ns"! I just started the EAT CLEAN DIET this week, and I had been trying to find out who sells this stuff!

I live in the HRM as well! I am just beginning my weight loss journey (not my first of course). I have 100 lbs to lose, so you are really inspiring!!!

Thanks for sharing!

DK517: You will find the Ezekiel Bread in the freezer section where the "health food" is. There are breads, english muffins, buns and wraps. You can find them at all of the grocery stores now! It's a bit pricier but it's a price I don't mind paying especially since it keeps in the freezer and I take a slice out whenever I want a slice and it doesn't go bad.

Good luck on your incredibly journey to losing 100 lbs! Thanks ;-) I hope I'll see you around here often!
