Okay bloggies I’ve been holding out on you a little bit. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about so many things in relation to my weight loss efforts and of course, now that I’ve seen Food Inc., my approach to eating in general (I promise I will talk more about the movie soon, lots to think about).
I decided about 2 weeks ago to rejoin with Weight Watchers Online. When I decided to stop following that program after having lost so much weight on it, I did so only because I felt like there was more to learn about the food I was eating other than only calories, fat and fibre. I am really glad that I did stray to learn those things. I have learned SOOOO much. What I didn’t do was lose weight! In fact, during my whole “finding myself” experience I regained some weight. The regain occurred not when I stopped following weight watchers, but when I started “calorie counting.”
I think most people agree that the WW system and calorie counting are essentially the same thing in the sense that they are two different approaches of restricting your daily calorie intake based on the same science of calories in v. calories out. Right?
Well something happened that I didn’t anticipate which caused me to regain some weight. It wasn’t because I stopped counting points, but I believe it was because I started counting calories! Huh?? Wha?? But didn’t you just say it was the same thing??
Here’s what I’m saying my little beauties: currently in my journey I am not at place that will allow me success without “counting” my daily calorie intake. I need that structure. But when I counted calories instead of POINTS, I didn’t feel like I had that “buffer” zone like I did with WW. If I exceeded my daily calorie allowance, I felt guilty. The Flex Plan (now it’s the Momentum Plan and is a bit different but the same for the purposes of what I’m saying), gives you that buffer zone in the form of the Flex Points that is a part of the plan. This obviously makes a difference to me because I know that the buffer zone of my 35 POINTS is there so if I go over after I’ve had my POINTS for the day, it’s still in keeping with the plan and I don’t feel guilty.
Guilt is one mother lovin’ hard feeling to shake in the business of weightloss, no? Guilt is the bad guy. Guilt is the thing that causes people to overeat most of the time and give you that “start tomorrow” kind of behaviour. That is the mentality I was getting into without the comfort of the buffer zone.
I know it is ALL just a mindset I don’t need to be made aware of that, but this whole friggin thing is 90% mindset because without the mindset, you’re not likely going to be sticking with any kind of lifestyle plan that is different from what your mind wants to do naturally, right?
This doesn’t mean that I feel okay with relying on frozen dinners and processed foods, but that is something I’ve learned to not even want! Following WW does not doom me to live on processed foods. You choose what you want to eat. The breath of fresh air is that the choice is mine and I now want to choose the whole foods! I can’t tell you how liberating that is. Once upon a time I had to make sure I was ticking off the guideline to make sure I was “getting my veggies in” and now I find myself not even worried about that because it’s a given. Big difference. Long way baby.
So there you have it bloggies, I’m back on WW and I feel like the hiatus from it was a necessary learning experience for me and I’ll even go so far as to say that the regain of some weight made it sink in and truly resonate. After all, I chose “Angie All The Way” for a reason. I didn’t put a time limit on my success, but promised to go “all the way” and that’s exactly what I’m doing.
I am really excited to be back and I know that I’m not the only one around here who’s decided to go back. It goes to show you how are not alone in this and how many of us go through the exact same feelings. I am so lucky to have found you all!

The one thing I hate about those who bash WW is the focus on processed foods they feel goes with it. I never saw it so I couldn't figure out why they did.
There is an abundance of choice available to you, and you of all people know that ;)
It will work because you work it, like you always do :)
Its ok - the best of us are counting those points ;-)

Welcome back to counting points! Like you said, counting points does not mean eating frozen dinners and processed foods, counting points means eating whatever YOU want and counting it! Good luck getting back on track :o)
I have found more freedom in WW than I ever did with anything else. I've learned more about what I am putting in my body and why things such as fiber are important. I don't think I will ever stop counting points. It is so simple and easy. And who says you have to eat processed foods on WW? I certainly don't. Good for you for making this decision.
I think it's great that you found "your way" again!!
I loved WW and I will always appreciate how far it got me and I think it is a great counting system.
I agree, a lot of people bash it when it is essentially counting calories.
I changed for the same reason that you did, and I found that counting worked best FOR ME. But like you said, it's all about YOUR mindset and what works for YOU.
Welcome back to the WW world! I agree with so much of what you said... especially about the food guilt. I struggle with that still... even almost a year after reaching goal.
i always count points (sometimes in my head - sometimes on paper if i need an extra push) anyway, so i think it's a smart choice. obviously it worked in the past and it will work again. i don't like calorie counting either - it creates a number obsession which i don't like. points are easy breezy!
Shhh...I'm giving it a month before I do the confession post. ;)
You rock :)
Angie, I understand what you are saying completely since I rejoined ww online four months ago I have started to relax more and listen to my body. If I am a little more hungry after all my points are gone then I use the flex, it is awesome to have that wiggle room. I have also started losing again which is great!
I'm with you Ang. As long as you focus on your healthy whole foods like you always have...WW is perfect for you!
I'm SO proud of you for doing what is right for you!! I'm doing WW as well, and it works for me too.
You are such an inspiration and congrats on the losses my lovely!
I can really relate to what you have said. I needed to 'find myself' and learn about food for awhile. As a result I left WW as well- I'm still gone really, but I have a whole new mind set now. I enjoy fruit and veggies now. Crazy!!!! I was the girl who hated them before and found it so hard to 'get them in'. It's such a change, you are right!
Good luck with everything and Congrats on all your accomplishments so far.
I know exactly what you are talking about. I've been recently considering whether I should try to break away from Weight Watchers in an attempt to better educate myself about what I'm eating beyond calories fat and fiber but I'm terribly afraid that without those weekly extra points I'll constantly feel guilty about my little calorie overages and stress out so much more than I already do. This was a great post!
I love that on WW online they give you the green flag for the filling foods which are most always fruits and veggies and high fiber HEALTHY foods. I LOVe WW! Glad to have you as a WW buddy! lol
Good luck with being back OP.
I personally love the program. I don't eat any of the frozen meals, bars, shakes, any of that. Though must admit that I do love a Vitatop now and then. The only package item I can't get away from. ;)
I love this.
You know I believe that we all need to find our own path and SO MANY TIMES that path isnt what others would choose (yeah, I am thinking everything from your WW post to tattoos :)).
once we find our way tho---there's no stopping us.
Welcome back to WW. I generally ate mostly core foods but it was bloggers like you that I came across who made me explore other whole, organic foods. Thank you for your searching as well :).
Yay! I'm so excited for you, it sounds like you're on a good path again!. Now, I'm totally a die-hard WWer, so I'm not suggesting you do anything else, BUT if you ever did want to go back to counting calories, you could probably design it so that you give yourself the same kind of 'calorie bank' as the flex points give ... like say you wanted to eat between 1200 and 1500 calories a day, you could just assign yourself a daily target of 1200 calories, and give yourself a 2100 calorie 'reserve' for the week (300 x 7). That's what I did in the (very brief) period I was counting calories.
For me though, I like points because they are a little imprecise. Do you know what I mean? Calories you can get SOOOO caught up in trying to figure out exact numbers. Like, how do I know this is EXACTLY 100 calories worth of sauce? Maybe it's 110, or 85! But with points, it's not so fussy, it's still pretty much 2pts, either way. It's much easier for the perfectionist in me to relax when counting points. :)
Anyway, sorry for the long-winded comment! I'm excited to read more about your new WWing adventures. :)
See...this is what I LOVE about the blogosphere! In my "real" life, there are few people in it who truly understand what I go through in this struggle. I relate to each and every one of you and have learned so much from you all. It is such a comfort to have you all here who actually know what I'm talking about.
MWAH!!!!!
Thanks for posting this:) I have been tempted to "count calories" and have even done this in the past. I think you definitely hit the nail on the head that the WW program is different because it build in flex points and you don't have the "guilt". I truly appreciate your blog and your weight loss is inspirational to a fellow "Angie" hoping to finally get it right:)
