Back to my Yoginess

I finally got in a hot yoga session last night at Breathing Spaces after work and it was great! Bionic and I both went and it was a fairly small class so the instructor/owner of the studio was able to spend a lot more time with instruction and correction on the group, so it was great. I sweat more than I have ever sweat at their hot yoga classes. I don't know if it was just that I was out of practice, or that the heaters were pulled in closer to us being a smaller class, but I sweat and it was great. Overall I didn't feel like I was working that hard, but my heart rate felt pretty elevated. The only not so great part was that I think I hurt my lower back in a back bend. She offered a modification to use a bolster to reach back to touch (and I should have followed Bionic's lead on that one) and I think I put too much pressure on my low back in stead of "bending at the 12th rib". I iced it when I got home and today it's just a little stiff, so hopefully it will clear up in a day or so. Honestly, it's one thing after another with me isn't it? Pffft!

Speaking of heart rate. Lori is a genius and I think I know why my HRM wasn't working right! The user settings are correct because I double and triple checked them, but I was playing around with the V02 Max setting a few weeks ago and tried to change it based on information I got somewhere else that wasn't right! I was trying to turn it up way past 100 and the thing maxes out at 90 or something and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't let me put in the number I wanted to put in (which was like 120 I think) but it's because the number I was going by was completely wrong! I think it should be set at around 30, but I'm not sure now because I don't know where it was set to begin with. I used some online calculators to figure out what it would have been based on my last run for time and distance, age etc. and it put it at 29ish, so I think I'm going to set it back to that for now.

Thanks Lori!! You guys are so great and helpful!! Thank you!

Hubby has some friends in town and we might be going out for dinner with them tonight, but plans have not been confirmed, so if not, I think tonight might be a good night to get a Nubody's punch pass strength training workout in, especially since it's dreary and rainy here today. I'm loving the variety of my activity of late :-)

Oh and a few of you have been asking me about my meals etc lately. Now that the BLBE is over, I feel I have more time to focus again and I am going to try to get back into being more descriptive for the blog. I'm still on the yogurt kick for the Planet Organic Yogurt Diet Club thing which I am insanely loving btw. I may not be getting in three 6 oz servings every single day, but I usually get in at least 2. The problem is that I'm loving the full fat Liberte Mediterranean flavours wayyyyy too much and it's taking a hit on trying to acheive a calorie deficit, so I'm trying to stay away from those, but it's hard because they taste like cheesecake!

OH and Planet Organic has posted their Cosmic Cookie recipe on their website! The mystery is over and I'm making a batch tonight :-) All the ingredients are the same as the recipe I found, but the ratios are a bit different, so I'm anxious to try it!

At least you have more time to focus now and get back to your blog--Managing two blogs and a challenge at that is HARD work!!

I'm glad you got your HR monitor to work better; it would have been a pain in the butt to buy another one.

you know what might feel better on your back? Well it's something I do...not sure if it'll help you. But when I feel sore, I take a nice hot shower and aim the water towards the area in question and massage. Like if it was my lower back, I'd run the warm water over the area for a couple minutes and try to stretch those muscles SUPER gently. NOt sure if this is helpful but just thought I'd let you know.

Remember - yoga is dangerous! always be cautious (ABC?)

I treat that mediter...yogurt like it is cheesecake. Get it only once or twice a year!

Good for you for all the exercise. Whenever I try for variety I do much less (out of a routine). I gotta stick to the same 2 or 3 things in a routine.

About a week or so ago, I saw your blog on punch cards, and I thought to myself that would be a great way to try yoga. I did a search of my area and found a ton of yoga centers, but I got discouraged because on the sites all the women are stick thin. I wish I wasn't so vein, but I am. Do any plus size women attend yoga classes? Will I stick out like a sore thumb?

I love reading your blog.

Glad I could help with the HR monitor. I had my VO2 tested at my gym and it did make a difference in the readings. Not sure how much of a difference it will make, but hopefully that was the problem.
I'm glad they don't sell that yogurt around me. I am currently addicted to Fage 0% with peanut butter or PB2 stirred into it. YUM!

Selma,
I am plus size too,and I go to yoga classes. Many are young slim women, but there are a mixture often-sometimes senior citizens, and I am definitely not the only overweight one there.
It's important to find a REALLY experienced teacher who is good and take a beginner's course with them if possible to learn properly.
A good teacher will be one who lways offers modifications on poses to help those less limber,or knee troubles etc.
Hope you learn to love it as I do, but it is important to find a less trendy studio with a wonderful teacher, otherwise you may try one class and never return and that would be sad to be your only experience....

Thanks anonymous. I'll keep all of that in mind and take my time to look for a place.

Selma; apologies in my lateness in a response. I agree with the anonymous commenter completely. Keep in mind though that I am willing to bet that regardless of size and weight, 99% of everyone in the room (especially a beginner class) is going to feel the same way you do. They are all thinking that all eyes are on them. I would definitely seek out a beginner class. I was lucky to find one in my neighbourhood that was so basic that it was 90% instructional about "how" and "why" and then practicing the poses individually and not in a flow sequence. That was sooo sooo important to be able to learn it properly and not just try to mimic what everyone else is doing. I would encourage you to try it and do it in a beginner class where everyone is in the same boat! Yoga is not about getting into those poses that look like you're in a pretzel. In fact, you should ONLY push your body to its own limit and doing otherwise is not what yoga is about. To get the most out of it, you need to learn to tune into your own body and your mind and work for it and not against it and sometimes that means only going part way into a posture. Any instructor would be more pleased to see that than to see something done improperly and dangerous. They are not impressed by people who go all the way into the pose while not being properly aligned. Know what I mean? Sorry about the ramble! lol

Hi Angie,
I'm also following the Yogurt diet and finding it's making a big difference. Takes away the cravings for "bad sweets".
What type of heat monitor do you have. I've been checking them out and trying to make a decision. Thanks for any input you might have.

I'm addicted to that Liberte Mediterranean yogurt now too. I always feel like I'm getting away with something when I eat it because it's like eating whipped cream...Yummy!

Anonymous: I have the Polar F6. It has a chest strap and had the capability to upload to your computer through the microphone and speakers! I know, strange, but it works!

I really like it, it works really well (minus my little hiccup I had lately, but I figured out it wasn't the fault of the HRM, just a setting I changed). I've always heard that any of the Polar HRM are the real deal. Hope that helps!
