My buddy Brookies is back and forth whether to buy the Garmin Forerunner 305 or 405. She was all geared up to get the 405, but then heard that people were saying the 305 is better than the 405. What do you runners out there think about them?
I had the same debate and ended up with the 305. The 405 is smaller, and I heard it was more difficult to read and press buttons. I will say on my wrist it looks awful big.
I can't justify the price to upgrade from a 205, but I've read other runners who have a lot of problems syncing data and can't see it at a glance either.
I have the 205 since I already had a heart rate monitor that I LOVE - One of my running partners has had many troubles with her 405 - aciddentlaly reseting things, changing screens when she doens't mean to etc.. I love how simple mine is and how easy to read while running since I'm the one responsible for keeping a pace and I read mine obsessively!!
I got the 405, mainly because I wanted the cool green one (ended up with black), and because it looks more like a watch. After some serious meltdowns, I've finally got it all figured out (I think) and I do like training with it. The GPS can be left on all the time, which syncs up faster than some 305's I know. The key to the 405 is to immediately lock the bezel as soon as you start your run - saves accidental resettings and other mishaps. I can usually see everything (sometimes I need readers!) and I like the look of it over the 305. The Garmin website is awesome BTW, as they have video tutorials (sp?) that have proven to be immensely helpful. And worse case, the 1-800# is fantastic, staffed with very patient, helpful people! I think the big difference between the two is esthetics and what you are looking for in that.
I have only ever had the 305 and have had no issues with it at all. You can use it inside with just the HRM as well if she wants to have this feature as well. I got a huge dealio on mine and it has been totally worth it.

I have the 205...and its fantastic.
Its big on your wrist, but you kinda need it to be big as you need to see it.
305 is a 205 with a HRM, so if she dosn't want a HRM... my vote is the 205!!
305--the 405 isn't worth the headache. IMHO. I just upgraded from a 101 (?) to the 305 and love it!
=)
Not a runner but I know my husband went through that whole thing and he went with the 305 as well.
