So just like that, about 2 hours after my run on Monday, I came down with the flu! Hubby had it last week and it lasted two days and I'm on day two right now (don't worry, it's the regular stomach flu variety!). The body aches have pretty much gone away now, and I'm left with a bad stomach, that seems to be easing up little by little. I've had some pretty bad luck with getting sick this year! Holy! So yesterday when Halifax had 29 degree (celsius) weather, I was inside on the couch in denial of it.
I'm sure I'll be back to as good as new tomorrow. It got me thinking though about that crazy calorie burn reading on my heart rate monitor on Monday. It seemed to be reading my heart rate properly the whole time and I wonder if my body was working harder than normal because I had the flu virus. Is that possible? My max heart rate was 185 It might not be the explanation, but the whole thing is odd because there was only one time that my HRM didn't work properly and it was when I was first learning how to use it and I didn't have the strap secured and moisened properly under my rib cage and it wasn't reading my heart rate. Strange. Oh well, I will just have to compare it to my exercise when I'm feeling better.
Regardless of the calorie burn of the run, it was a personal best for me for a 5km run. It was 31:18 which is 3 minutes faster than my time at the Bluenose last year. My Nike+ has been calibrated, so it's pretty close to accurate now. Last year when I was training for my first 5k, it wasn't calibrated and was underestimating my distances which made an actual 5k at race time a big surprise for a first timer. Brooke is going to let me try out her Garmin 305 to see how I fair out.
The Bluenose is only 3 weeks away! I better get my buns in gear and register!

Poor Ang - always sick :( Feel better soon!
Aww that sucks that you're sick :( Hope you're feeling better soon, especially since we're getting this nice weather and you're stuck inside.
That's really weird about the HRM, if it keeps giving you really high calories burned then maybe take it back to the store and explain what's happening. (Was the Running Room right? I hear they're pretty reasonable.)
Yeah, there's no way you coulda burned that number of cals for that kinda run...but it would be nice if it WAS possible huh? :)
Definitely you should take it back to store-something funny going on with it,whether you are fighting flu or not!
Get well soon!Glad it's not the OTHER flu!
My latest taste treat...a fried egg sandwich(with MUSTARD,on toast with cheese)The regular mustard gives it a yummy tang!!!!
Hope you feel better soon! That is awesome about your time!
Hope the flu doesn't last long for you! No fun, I am just getting over it myself...
Your HR could have been a little higher, but calories burnt still would not have been that high. See what your friends Garmin says and probably take yours back.
Feel better soon!
You should compare what your HRM says to what this calculator says (not saying it's right, just another option)

i hate being sick when the weather is nice - it's such a cruel joke of nature! i hope you feel better soon!
I woke up with some sort of illness too! HOpe we both feel better!
Wow! You guys are having some AMAZING weather!!!
I hope you are feeling better soon though!!! That really sucks!!!
I agree with Lynn, see what the store can do about your monitor...that doesn't seem right, even if your heart rate was that high...
I had to go back and check what you had put for the calorie burn - thinking how far off could it be?
Last time I burned that much I had done a half marathon!
I can't believe you took 3 minutes off your time - that is so impressive! 3 minutes is showing some real gains in your pace - awesome, awesome, awesome work!!
Oh, and I wanted to say thanks - I think it was you that mentioned putting natural peanut butter in the fridge upside down after stirring it.... I had stopped buying natural because it kept separating.... I just went out today and bought a jar thanks to your fabulous idea!!
congrats again on the run - great work!!
