Timbit Turbulence

Who doesn’t enjoy a good Friday??? Hmmmm???? Pas moi! There’s something about it that makes it easier to get up and get a start on the day. Or maybe it was because I replenished my supply of bulk organic oats when I went to Planet Organic the other day? I haven’t been enjoying the Scottish oats that I had be using lately because it was all I had left. Thanks to the smarty-pants commenter who piped up to solve the oats trivia btw ;-) I also stocked up on some sliced natural almonds which I have also been missing. What I got was a fantastic bowl of oats for Breakfast. Today’s mix:

  • 1/3c large flake organic oats
  • 1/2c Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze
  • 1/2c water
  • 1/2 banana, chunked and cooked in with the above on a low simmer
  • 1 tbsp ground flax meal
  • pinch of salt
  • splash of vanilla, splash of sugar free cinnamon dolce syrup
  • dash of cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp Chocolate PB2 drizzled all over top
  • 10g toasted sliced almonds sprinkled on top of the works

7:30 a.m.: That and my cup of coffee (in my Santa mug, yes, I couldn’t pack it away :-D)………….ta da:

8:30a.m.: A client brought in coffee from Tim Horton’s and a dreaded big box of timbits. Nice gesture in theory, right? Problem is that the big guy was tied up in examinations outside of the office all day with said client leaving them a mere 4 feet from my desk all day. I decided that I had no desire whatsoever to have any timbits, but I would fancy myself another cup of coffee that he brought in because, well, it was Friday and they were going to go to waste! So I added some blend cream and a bit of sugar. It’s been a WHILE since I’ve had a Tim Horton’s coffee I realized:

12:00p.m.: I get out my Lunch which I’m all excited to have. It’s the last leftover serving of Bob’s Red Mill Vegi Soup and a strawberry flavoured mini Liberte No Fat Probiotic Svelte Yogurt topped with fresh strawberries, the other half of the banana from breakfast and a half of a kiwi. I was going to have the diet orange crush with it, but I ended up forgetting to open it!:

Oh My Yum! Is all I have to say about this:

And all was good and I had a very satisfying lunch. And I stepped out of the office for a spin over to the mall and there they were:

2:00 p.m: It has also been ages since I had a donut or a timbit too! Did you know that donuts are one of the worst things you can actually eat?? As far as your insulin levels and blood sugar is concerned? But I decided I’d have one or two anyway since it had been ages and I am otherwise eating pretty healthfully.

Here’s the problem: it’s not that it’s not okay with having this kind of stuff once and a while, it’s that it’s like friggin crack! Before I knew it, 2 timbits turned into 5, okay FRIG 6, but only because the last one I pulled out had another one stuck to it! :-D And it was all because of the refined sugary crack that got to me. All of those little “bits” easily added up to an entire donut, if not 1 +1/2. I kept wanting more because there is never a point where I ever get that “satisfied” feeling from these like I would from my delicious yogurt with fruit.

*sigh* it is ever thus. And guess what??? Sure enough I felt the crash of the sugar come slamming down on my around 3:30. I knew that I had planned to get a good elliptical workout in when I got home before supper, and I started feeling so tired and sleepy it was the last thing I wanted to do.

But I wasn’t letting myself get out of it because I needed to work off the 300 cals or so that I had consumed unnecessarily. And that meant that there would be no “Friday Night Pizza” as there usually is in our house. I had planned on an “Amy’s Pizza” but I couldn’t afford the calories, so nope! It was one or the other, not both.

5:00 p.m. So I got home, got changed (it pays to have comfy Lulu workout gear to change into!) and I did a hard tough 30 mins on the elliptical, sweat my buns off and then had a delicious Supper of baked haddock breaded with whole wheat bread crumbs, a bit of shake n’ bake, flax meal, S&P, parmesan cheese, paprika, tumeric and a side of steamed green beans with a little butter, S&P and sprinkled with some fresh parm and a slice of multigrain artisan bread smeared with becel:

And oh MY it was good! I didn’t feel bad about missing out on pizza night at all! In fact, I turned a rather disappointing timbit afternoon into a successful evening!

I feel great now! :-D

The Low G.I. Diet book says large flake oats are excellent to eat, more so than regular size!

I have the same timbit problem-I am fine without them and don't buy them, but when they are in front of me look out!You were strong to not let it derail your whoel day as I usually do....That shows you have a healthy perspective on weight loss -most of us are "all or nothing" dieters which never seems to work in the long run.I am going to try and learn the lesson you already know!!!
I may even try hot yoga this weekend!

PS
I don't think heating up your soup in a plastic container is healthy.
Can you store a bowl at work to heat things up in?
There was a big thing in news a while ago, stating don't heat plastic and don't freeze plastic.

Blame my obsession on looking up the nutritional information lately...

I've looked up Timbits before but as a refresher checked it out again. They're anywhere from 50-90 calories EACH!

Yeah... let's not talk about how many I ate the other day. Let's just say "snack pack" minus the one I dropped on the floor.

Donuts are so addicting! My favorite ones are the so called "old fashioned" ones with the thick frosting. If I have one in the morning, I'm wrecked for the rest of the day.

I had to buy donuts for a meeting I was hosting yesterday (the attendees were all men, and men think they have to have donuts). So I just made sure to buy any kind except the "old fashioned" kind, so I was able to resist. I also bought fruit and yogurt, which I ate. And I didn't eat even one bite of donut! I did it for the team! Go A-Team!

Good for you for turning the "donut fiasco" around!

I looove hulled oats...I wonder if that's the same as Scottish oats? They look like grains of rice, sort of. So good.

The "plastic in the microwave" thing was Snopes'd. Here's a link:

Every time I think I want a Timbit, I remember how my mouth feels after I finish it. Yuck. Keeps me out of them. Your dinner looked fabulous!

Yah, for getting in a work out after the dreaded TBs! Plus you rocked it and had fish instead of pizzie, *bows down* LOL :)

I'm SO the same way, some things I seem to not be able to have just a serving of..... tortilla chips, hard candies, pizza.

Oh my word Angie....I am so much like you! Here in the US we have the equivalent evil "munchkins" from Dunkin Donuts. (Which has the best coffee in the world, IMHO.)

I CANNOT eat just one, and I feel horrible after I eat donuts. I love them, but it is just not worth the crash and burn later. I am so impressed though, with you getting on that elliptical anyway, and with skipping the pizza. You are my hero!

Oh, and I think you should look into being a professional food photographer! I think you have a serious eye for that! Your pix always look great. :)

Darn those friggin donuts!!!! They ARE so hard to resist and NO, you can't just eat one!! But, you made a great trade-off with your workout and skipping the pizza for an awesome fish dinner. I keep reminding myself, "if you wanna play, you gotta pay!" and you did just that! Way to work that out (or should I say - off!) You Rock!

I wouldn't have been able to resist either. At least you did get a work out in and ate well the rest of the day. It wasn't a total bust.

You are just the biggest inspiration ya know??? I mean, I had a little incident with a Hershy's bar last night (ok, so maybe two) and felt like crap on a stick for the rest of the night. I need to learn that falling off is not a free for all, and to get my big butt in gear and "get er done" so to speak ;)

A little slip is better than a big slip, IMHO. And you came home and worked out, which makes it even less of a slip.

Yay for no pizza on pizza night! Do you ever make your own pizzas? My kids love pizza, but we usually have homemade pizza - where you can control the toppings and how much cheese you have. Pizza is actually not all that bad if you have it with veggies and lite on the cheese! My favorite is roasted veggie pizza with a little mozza and a little feta. Mmmm.

And this is why you will remain a healthy, beautiful woman for the rest of your life. You "get" the balance.

You had your timbit... so you had to work out. You couldn't have the pizza.

That's "the secret" if there is such a thing, is the balance, in my books. Sure I can have a treat. Did I earn it? What am I going to sub out that will help me to balance my nutrition today to allow said treat??

Okay, I'm not successful with this 100% of the time, but who is?? If we can do that MOST of the time, we will continue being healthy, and never be fat again.

I'm so happy that the Santa mug is back I am not even going to say you suck :p

It's good that you did satisfy your craving, felt bad about it, and then worked it off on the elliptical. Now you can put the whole donut/tim bit cravings aside for another 5 years!

WOW great job in turning your day around!!

PS Is it wrong that I wanted to dust the top of your oatmeal with cocoa powder and take a bite?

Timbits are evil. :P

Your supper made me drool a little. I love green beans!

Randi said...

yeah donuts are bad. But I heard a dietician say that if you're going to tim hortons, and want a treat, have the donut because while it's bad, all the other stuff you think is healthier actually has higher fat and calories (bagels and muffins and cookies etc) and at least with a donut you'll enjoy it as a treat and maybe curb your eating later. Seriously, store bought muffins (aside from low fat ones) are HORRIBLE.
