Hey folks! I cannot believe that it’s Thursday already! This week flew by! I felt like a busy little bee all week, so that must be why.
I had yet another doctor’s appointment today because I am still sick. Yes that’s right for 3 solid months! I’ve had a chronic sinus infection and bronchitis and I’ve already been on 2 rounds of antibiotic. I was sure this time she would send me for an x-ray or something, but she didn’t. Instead she pulled out the big guns and gave me yet another prescription of “super duper” antibiotics. I don’t know exactly what they are, but she pulled out a book to look it up in and the pharmacy didn’t even end up having it so I have to wait to get it tomorrow after work rather than today. She’s from Scotland so I don’t know if it’s because we have different drugs here or not, but apparently this stuff’s getting “ordered in special” pour moi :-D I have to take it 3 times a day for two weeks and then see her again to see if I need to go on the third week of it. I also have some kind of Nasonex stuff too. She said no more neti pot too. She said the saline isn’t doing the trick so to stop using it.
Here’s my beef about this whole situation: It’s a catch 22. There are plenty of articles out there warning people not to be over-using antibiotics and anti-bacterial soaps and wipes etc. The reason for this is that because antibiotics are being overprescribed and because our population has become germaphobes, all of the bacteria is becoming resistant to our antibiotics and anti-washes. It doesn’t even matter if YOU haven’t had antibiotics in years, it still affects you the same because it’s the bacteria that’s coming back stronger and not your immunity that’s becoming resistant. So answer me this you fine folks…..what is a sick girl to do in that situation? This is my third round of antibiotics that I obviously need to kill this mother of an infection and if you’re sick with a bacterial infection you need to take them, right? She said if it was caused by a virus it would have cleared up by now. Patients are presenting with these kinds of symptoms and doctors are prescribing and prescribing. Are they wrong? Apparently it’s the doctors who are overprescribing antibiotics and the most common reason is for bronchitis = ME!
So here I am still sick 3 months later having taken antibiotics and about to go on a third round. I almost feel kind of guilty for it because now I’m one of those people in the population taking all of these antibiotics! Am I being socially irresponsible? I don’t believe that it’s the patient that should be making these calls and I’m not saying that it is. So who needs to be the ones informed about this: doctors or the patients? I’m not even sure that doctors are really doing anything wrong, just that it’s a worrisome consequence to the all great antibiotic.
Anyhoo, that’s my little rant for today on a subject I really know nothing about! Feel free to pipe up if you’re informed on this topic and if there’s something I should aware of :-D
So I suppose that it’s time for me to tell you all about my eats for the day!
I was feeling like a crazy woman this morning and ventured away from my all mighty oatmeal and had an egg on top of two slices of this potato & scallion bread loaf, toasted, with light mayo, fresh spinach and sliced tomato. (This is one egg cut into two btw). I had my coffee this morning in my Santa mug - I’m having a hard time letting go of that little guy for some reason :-D:
I did have a morning Snack today shortly before my doc appointment and it was such a delicious pink grapefruit. I remember the days when I felt the need to sprinkle sugar on top of a grapefruit before eating it. Now there’s no need whatsoever! I just love the way it tastes all on it’s own. That goes to show you how our tastes can be evolved according to the lifestyle we lead, right? It was a bit of a juicy and sticky mess, but I loved it:
And since I was out of Starbucks sugar free syrups, I made it a point to plan a skinny latte into my day and stopped by on my way back to the office from the doc. I got a tall skinny cinnamon dolce latte along with a new bottle of syrup and….a new morning coffee mug :-) I might just retire the ol’ Santa mug after all ;-). So for Lunch today I had some leftovers from last night’s southwest bulgur casserole type concoction:
I even had an afternoon Snack today too. I had the leftover blackberries from yesterday and a cheese string. Don’t those berries look scrumptious??:

There was another Snack in the mix today too. I bought a bag of these baked rice krisps when I was at Shopper’s Drug Mart and I had about 150 cals worth throughout the day. They were pretty good, I must say:

Supper this evening was a spin on a beef & broccoli stir fry. I used one grocery store prepared tub of oriental stir fry mix from the produce section, added some extra broccoli and onion so it was much more than beef & broccoli. I also discovered a trick for making it extra flavourful – I marinated the beef sirloin strips in a ziplock baggie in the fridge over night in soy sauce, garlic, ginger, crushed red pepper, S&P. It made a big difference in flavour. I also added some orange juice and orange zest into the juices and it worked really well:
Oh YEAH and there’s beet greens in this mix too! Told yas that “I aint ‘fraid a no veggie!” I couldn’t even tell it was in there! How could I not have been eating these leafy good-for-you greens like collards, swiss chard and bok choy all of these years!
And since it’s been a while since I had my little sweet after dinner something, I had two little mini Toblerone chunks for only 60 calories:

So all in all it was a good day food-wise.
I’m really looking forward to get a really good sweat on this weekend. It’s been farrrrrr toooooo long for me. This illness has supremely kicked my butt for the last three months and I’m ready to just fight back with a vengeance! The hot yoga didn’t help me last time, but I’m hoping it will this time. I am really looking forward to it very much. I loved it last time even though I was miserably sick. You just feel so incredible afterwards. I am anxious to see the difference between Moksha and Breathing spaces!
Oh and I was changing the spare bedrooms around and I had one of them all up in shambles with the foam all upset on the bed. It is the room that I use in the morning to blow dry my hair etc. Normally Lucy sleeps either in her crate or on the bed with us (yes I know tsk tsk:-P), but I discovered when I went in there to get ready for work that she found a new place to sleep for the night:
Damn she’s cute!
Night night everyone!

I hope you feel better soon and the new medication helps!! Your dog is super cute by the way. And your breakfast...YUM-O! I have been trying to eat more like you lately since all your food looks super good!
Angie, BTW, please double-check this, but I think grapefruit and antibiotics are a nono - decreases the effectiveness of the antibiotics.
lol...great minds think alike for supper!
GO TEAM ANGIE!
I seem to remember something about acid in grapefruit and antibiotics as well, maybe check it out.
Hope you feel better soon!
I am sorry that you are still sruggling with your infection - how frustrating.
I don't know too much about antibiotic resistance, but as a mom I am careful about how many times my kids take antibiotics. I know many parents who insist on their kids being given antibiotics, almost as a preventative measure. This is exasperated by how many Canadians don't have regular health care providers, and use walk-in clinics as their doctor. I personally think a walkin clinic is more likely to prescribe unnecessary drugs (just my opinion though).
Puppy is so cute (=
Ditto on the grapefruit antibiotic thing.
Also, here's my thought... is it possible that what you are treating is actually the symptom of something else being untreated and that's why it won't clear up?
Don't feel guilty about your antibiotics. Yes, they are overprescribed, but usually it's because people insist that their doctors prescribe them for viruses where they won't do any good. That, or don't finish the course they've been given for bacterial infections because they start to feel better and think they don't need them anymore. Also, of course, the widespread use of anti-bacterial everything that you mentioned.
YOU obviously need them, so take them--but take ALL of them (not that you haven't been)!
I really hope you feel better soon! That's crazy how long you've been sick!
I hope you're feeling better soon ((hugs))
That grapefruit looked sooo good, the next time I hit up the grocery store I'm going to grab some ... as well as some grapefruit juice!!
Your dog BTW is ADORABLE!!!!
I hope you get better this time around!
Hope you're feeling better soon.
Lucy is definitely a cutie!
As an RN, I see antibiotics often being overprescribed. What kind of diagnostics did your doc run to KNOW that this is indeed a bacterial infection. Are you coughing up stuff from your lungs? This sputum could be used to get a sputum sample to check it for bacteria. Did you have a chest x-ray? This could tell a lot about what is going on and the progression of it especially if it's been this long! Did you have blood work? If you've been sick this long, it would be interesting to see what your white blood cell count is like (usually high for a bacterial infection, but since you've been sick so long they could be low because its depleted). It just seems to me that they should do more diagnostics. Try these and if they don't work, I would insist on some investigations.
My doc knows I'm not big on antibiotics -- but there are appropriate times to take them! Plus, the far bigger threat is the irresponsible overuse in farming, quite frankly. Take 'em and get better. Because Team Lynn is going to kick ass! ;-) Just kidding. Do get better and do what you need to do!
I'm sorry you're still sick!! It sucks when you get those illness that just move around your body and never seem to go away totally.
Hang in there Ang!
Nasonex always does the trick for me!!Hope you feel better soon
Thanks for all of your input guys, it really is a help :-)
EM & ML: I had not heard of this! I will check it out. It was my one and only grapefruit and will not buy any more til after AB's Thanks!
Farmgirl: you and I ARE quite a pair, that's is true! ;-P
MOB: so true, soooo true!
Dee: well I certainly hope that's not the case. It's bronchitis and a chronic sinus infection keeping it going - or so the doc says. I haven't had ANY tests of any kind, just the regular doc exam of listening to my lunges and BP etc.
Lainey: good point about people not finishing the course of AB's. Thanks girl.
Criz, Dan, ~Tam: thanks girls ;-)
Tiffa: there has been no diagnostics at all. I was expecting her to send me in for an x-ray or bloodwork this time, but instead wanted me to try a longer course of a different kind of AB and to return to see her in two weeks. Okay nursey, here's my symptoms at present (stop reading if TMI): I am still coughing up stuff from my lungs (white), but it has improved. She's got me on two inhalers for this to help clear out the inflammation that she believes is being prolonged from the sinus part. I had the worst nausiated sick feeling in my head/sinuses that was utterly awful until this last round of AB's. That went away and now is a chronic runny nose (with blood now) and sinus headaches and tenderness. SO there is evidence of bact infection, but it looks like the first two kinds of AB's weren't strong enough and/or weren't a long enough course of treatment?
If I am not better on my next visit, I will have to insist on some testing of some kind. This is not normal to be sick this long!
Alexia: Thanks doll, you're right.
Aww cutie! Marty sleeps with us too. I don't care...he's my damn dog and he'll sleep where I want him to! :-)
Hope you feel better really soon!
I understand where you are coming from on the antibiotics thing - I would feel the same way...But I guess the question is: What are your other options? You can't stay sick and it certainly seems this problem is not going to go away on it's own. As you say, I might have expected the doctor to send you for more tests, but I'm not a doctor so what do I know?
I hope the new antibiotics do the trick though, and that you are well again soon!
My opinion is that you are the VICTIM rather than the cause of the over prescribing antibiotics. You're already dealing with mutant germs that regular antibiotics aren't killing. Do you think?
CUTE puppy. (daisy sleeps either with us, in her kennel or on the bench looking out the front window)
Aw, I love Lucy!! She is too adorable!!!
Bah...I don't really know what to say about the antibiotics situation...i have been on WAY too many in my life that I really don't like taking medicine!!! (They did warn you about the way antibiotics affect birth control right??? Please tell me they did...)
Anyhoo, I am DYING to have those blackberries (send me some, would ya? ;p) your food looks SOOOOO delicious! (and I am going to try your trick for the beef!!!)
Awww.... your dog and my dog have a similar look about them. Does she have any beagle in her? My dog was a mutt from a shelter, so we don't know his parentage. :o )
the beef & broccoli looks yummy!!
hope you feel better SSSSOOOONNN!!!
The only problem with hot yoga is that once you've done a few classes it's something you want to do all the time!So good for mind AND body. But I am trying to figure out how to afford it-it's certainly isn't cheap....
Psst... I put a picture of my beagle-mix up, if you want to see. :o )
Awwwe she is sooo cute!
Angie.....if this next antibiotic doesn't make you feel better, I would insist on a CT scan of the sinuses. You could have a really bad sinus infection that is just not going to clear up with antibiotics, no matter what you use. Sometimes they actually have to finally do surgery to correct the problem. Hopefully, this new med will kick your sickness to the curb, just like we are going to kick Lynn's team to the curb! Whooo hoooo! :)
Shrinking Sue
I don't know about the sinus infection but I had the cough that would not go away and I checked into non medicine solutions. There was a suggestion to take glucosamine, so I took one a day and in a week the cough was gone.
Your dog is adorable.
I SO stole your egg idea this AM!! :) And yes I was freaking up at 5AM. Grr.
