Get heart smart when looking for a pound-shedding plan

Thanks Tasha for sending me this article from the Globe and Mail. This article summarizes a study that was done comparing different popular diet plans and how they compared with promoting good heart health. This study put "Weight Watchers High carbohydrate" as the second place finisher after "Eat More, Weigh less" and apparently "Weight Watchers High Protein" as a sixth place finisher of eight.

I just have one question.....what they heck are they talking about "Weight Watchers High Carbohydrate" and "Weight Watchers High Protein" plans? I've doing following WW for long time now and the only distinctions I know of are the "Flex Plan" and the "Core Plan" which to the best of my knowledge are not distinguished between high carb or high protein. Am I wrong? Maybe I am.

I saw this same report on CBC news today. I was a little confused about the "high carb" & "high Protein" parts too, but overall they said WW was best because it focused on fruits, veg & fibre, and didn't deprive a food group.

Hrm, that is kind of weird, but it reminds me of a sheet my very first leader gave me when I complained that I was starving during my first two weeks on the program -- it had menu ideas for each mealtime (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner), and one side was how to add protein, and I believe the other side was how to add carbs.

I wonder if I'm remembering this incorrectly now? Anyway, I've never seen anyone reference or give out the sheet since, so I wonder if it was left over from some previous program?

Maybe someone who's been around longer than a year can confirm or deny... :P

Me again...

Did you read those people who commented at the end of the article?

ARGGGGGG SCREW YOU!

I hate it when WW gets lumped in with all the other fad diets out there. It gives people the wrong impression. I also hate when people give "eat less, move more" advice. Yeah, DUH, but IT ISN'T THAT EASY.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. People suck.

That is so weird...sounds to me like someone got their wires crossed....I thought the plan promoted healthy choices in general!!! Bad enough to put Flex vs Core now we have to be Protein vs. Carbs...I think I will join the carbs crew!! kidding...

I know about 4 years ago or so they had a high protein/low carb plan to follow (ON FLEX) when atkins was the rage but it was still their points program. Perhaps she was using old program data, which studies normally do as they aren't published for YEARS.

always have to take them with a grain of salt. usually are outsiders looking in. talking heads are usually just full of knowledge and can't put EVERYTHING into practice well - just the things they hold true, right?

same with the comments, much like ours. we'll extol the virtues of WW but nothing else because that's what WE know to work.

but seriously, what is up with the person eating two meals and the other with the hemp hearts? people are nutso!

Yep, I've never heard of this either!

I've never heard of this distinction either but I've never attended any of the meetings so I couldn't really say for sure.

PS I bought rolled oats in the groceries last night. Let me know if you've come up with anything creative that I can try!!

The weight watchers plan does just promote healthy choices. But if you are having trouble, the leaders in most places have a meal plan sheet that can help you out. And it has the two choices on it. But that's a weird way to do it for an article.

Maybe they are American plans?

I'm on WW and only know Flex and Core.

they dont have seperate plans but they follow the healthy diet pyramid 5 carbs: 3protien me thinks.. so if you cant eat that much carbs or it doesnt suit then swap around the ratios. our leader never exculsivly said anything about this but mentioned it once in a meeting..
